Weekly Meeting: Ellen Anon "Intentional Camera Movement"

Members Only

Zoom

Our featured speaker is Ellen Anon:

Overview: For some  the goal in photography is to use the shortest fastest exposure possible to freeze the moment and avoid movement from any source, whether the camera or the subject.  But that isn’t the only way to take compelling images .By intentionally moving a camera either during a long exposure or by combining multiple shots into a single image, with the camera moving during and/or between each shutter release, it’s possible to create captivating and artistic images of almost anything, that may be even more expressive than “normal” shots.  In this talk Ellen will cover a variety of ways to create memorable images incorporating camera movement. She’ll include ways to create a multiple exposure effect during image capture even if your camera lacks the ability to do so automatically, as well as post processing options.

Ellen is a an internationally acclaimed photographer, writer, and speaker who specializes in expressive photography. Her images, most often based on nature, are sometimes realistic and sometimes abstract but always designed to elicit emotional reactions from the viewer. Her goal is to go beyond the ordinary in ways that hopefully stimulate others to pause and appreciate some of the beauty and wonder of our earth to help balance some of the stress of everyday life. Ellen has won recognition in numerous world wide competitions including the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competitions. She has co-authored 9 books on photography and digital processing as well as numerous articles and video training materials.

Weekly Meeting: Elements of Posing

Members Only

Join us for an evening with photographer Eileen Cote as she shares elements of posing and connecting with your subjects.

A note from Eileen:

I’m looking forward to speaking with everyone at Photo Venture. It’s my first home when it comes to my photography family.

I was inspired by so many in this amazing group of photographers to take my photography from a hobbyist to a professional.

I joined PPA and entered their competitions. By doing this and working the print judging within the surrounding states also attending yearly classes, I was educated on what I needed to look for when capturing an image to make it look its best instead of overshooting and hoping for the best.

I have won several awards: Kodak Gallery Awards, Fuji Masterpiece Awards, earned my Master of Photography Degree, Photographic Craftsman and I am Certified. These goals were earned for my own validation.

I am excited to share some posing tips and lens selections, and their purpose, to help fine tune your images

With spring and summer approaching, some of our thoughts may turn to entering photography competitions and shows, such as the annual Indiana State Fair competition.

At Thursday’s meeting, longtime Photo Venture member Eric Schoch will discuss Printing for Competitions.

The presentation will focus on producing quality prints, and on producing successful prints. Eric has received multiple awards at the fair and other competitions over the years, and last summer printed the images for the club’s state fair entry, which won first place in the club competition.

About Eric:

I am a lens-based visual artist exploring shapes, line, color and tone in images of the city and the countryside, and in portraits, presented in various levels of abstraction.

I am self-taught in photography, and have been influenced by workshops and seminars with John Paul Caponigro in Maine, Sam Abell on Whidbey Island, Wash., Art Wolfe in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Olympic Peninsula, and Thom Hogan in Patagonia and South Africa.

I have shown work at the Indiana Landmarks Center, Five Seasons Studio and M10 Studio in Indianapolis, the Clark Gallery at the Honeywell Center in Wabash, Ind., the Opera House Gallery of Contemporary Art in Delphi, Ind., and in Black and White magazine. WEEKLY MEETING: Matt Williams, Director Indiana chapter of The Nature Conservancy

7:00 PM19:00

WEEKLY MEETING: Matt Williams, Director Indiana chapter of The Nature Conservancy

Next Stop, Ecuador! Meet Matt Williams and learn more about The Nature Conservancy, Indianapolis.

TNC is in the process of creating a series of photography trips that will go to some of the most biologically diverse locations in the world.

These will be photo safari type trips to locations specifically for their unique photo opportunities to capture shots of birds, animals, landscapes, macro subjects, astro photography, etc. The trips will also offer the opportunity to learn about the important conservation work The Nature Conservancy is doing in these geographies, meet with local staff, and tour interesting cultural and historical sites. Their next adventure is Ecuador, July 2024. Get your passport ready!

Matt’s career with The Nature Conservancy began in 1998 as a seasonal field assistant banding endangered birds and mapping their nesting habitat on the Fort Hood military base in central Texas as part of a joint project between the Conservancy and the Department of Defense. From there, he became the Preserve Manager for the Conservancy’s Texas City Prairie Preserve where he led habitat restoration efforts and worked closely with the Attwater’s Prairie Chicken Recovery Team to track the population of this critically endangered species.

Matt came to work for the Indiana Chapter in 2001 as the North-Central Indiana Land Steward. He became a burn boss and led prescribed fire and invasive species control efforts across more than a dozen Nature Conservancy properties in that part of the state.

Since 2015, Matt has served as the Director of Conservation Programs for the Indiana Chapter. In this role, he oversees the science, land acquisition, and land management work of the Chapter. He also is the past chair and current member of the Midwest Division Conservation Cabinet which is responsible for developing and reviewing many of the conservation strategies being implemented across the five states of the Midwest Division.

Matt is also an award-winning nature photographer and author. His works include Indiana State Parks: A Centennial Celebration which features Matt’s landscape photography of Indiana’s state parks. A more recent book, Endangered and Disappearing Birds of the Midwest, tells the story of forty bird species across the Midwest that are most in need of conservation efforts. The book won a silver medal in the 2018 Foreword Reviews Independent Book Awards competition, and a bronze medal in the 2019 Independent Publisher Book Awards- a competition involving books from nearly 2,500 different publishers from the United States, Canada, England, Australia, and several other countries. He was recently asked to write the forward for the re- release of the classic work The Birds of Indiana, featuring the life histories of many of the bird species of the state as well as the artwork of William Zimmerman. Matt’s photographs have appeared in several other books and national magazines, including Bird Watcher’s Digest and National Wildlife.

Matt, his wife Karyn, and their four children live in Crawfordsville, Indiana where they enjoy kayaking along Sugar Creek, hiking at Shades State Park, and serving in their local church.

Holiday Party and Print Exchange

Members Only (plus 1)

No alcohol permited

Join us for PVCC's annual holiday party potluck and print gift exchange. The club will provide an entree of deli meats and cheeses. Please bring your 'plus 1' and a favorite hot or cold dish or dessert to share. Watch for an RSVP sign up so we can plan accordingly.

If you wish to join the exchange, bring a gift-wrapped - no names! - matted print; suggested 8x10 or larger but a calendar of your work or some notecards would also be nice. Each person who gifts, gets to choose and unwrap a print. The next in line has the option to steal or open a new print. If your gift gets stolen, you pick or steal another until everyone who entered has a print. (A print can only be stolen twice.) If you were there last year, you can't help but remember what a blast this was - for everyone not named Paul.

Due to road construction in the area, the best approach is to turn west from 10th St onto Cherry St. This intersects with S 5th St, and the little yellow former church is the Birdie Gallery.

Competition Results: "A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words"

MEETING: Zoom

We’ll gather at 7 pm for informal discussion and then start the formal meeting at 7:30, for monthly competition results.

This month’s topic is "A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Words"

The goal is telling a story, or perhaps suggesting a story, through one image.

Our judge, Jennifer McClure, has developed a photographic style of story-telling. Feel free to visit her web site for more insight into her style and how she approaches it. www.jennifermcclure.com.

Jennifer McClure is a fine art photographer based in New York City. She uses the camera to ask and answer questions. Her work is about longing, solitude, and an ambivalent yearning for connection. She often uses herself and her experiences as subject matter to explore the creation of personal mythology and the agency of identity.

After an early start, Jennifer returned to photography in 2001, taking classes at the School of Visual Arts and the International Center of Photography. In between, she acquired a B.A. in English Theory and Literature and began a long career in restaurants. Most of her projects today incorporate her love of literature; one series was inspired by a short story, another includes photos of transformative texts, still another draws titles from a long-form poem.

Jennifer was a 2019 and 2017 Critical Mass Top 50 finalist and twice received the Arthur Griffin Legacy Award from the Griffin Museum of Photography's Juried Exhibitions. Her first book, You Who Never Arrived, was published as one of nine Peanut Press Portfolios in 2020. She was awarded CENTER's Editor's Choice by Susan White of Vanity Fair in 2013 and has been exhibited in numerous shows across the country. Her work has been featured in publications such as National Geographic, Vogue, GUP, The New Republic, Lenscratch, Feature Shoot, L'Oeil de la Photographie, The Photo Review, Dwell, Adbusters, and PDN. Lectures include the School of Visual Arts i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration series, Fotofusion, FIT, NY Photo Salon and Columbia Teachers College. She has taught workshops for Leica Akademie, International Center of Photography, Los Angeles Center of Photography, PDN's PhotoPlus Expo, the Maine Media Workshops, the Griffin Museum, and Fotofusion. She was a thesis reviewer and advisor for the Masters Programs at both the School of Visual Arts and New Hampshire Institute of Art. She founded the Women's Photo Alliance in 2015.

Competition Results: "The Urban Landscape"

MEETING: Zoom

We’ll gather at 7 pm for informal discussion and then start the formal meeting at 7:30, for monthly competition results.

This month’s topic is "The Urban Landscape"

Our judge will be Marcel Fouch:

Marcel Fouch has been a professional musician for over 30 years with a love for photography. When the pandemic hit he decided to step back and focus on photography as a way to stay creative.

He is based in Chicago. His photographic work is mainly street photography focused on black and white images. Shadows and light are his main focus making many of his photographs feel like memories. A lot of his work has a theme of isolation, something everyone was feeling during the Pandemic and a feeling that continues for some today.

Marcel was chosen as the first Featured Artist for Roberts Camera Gallery in July, so you may have become acquainted with his work.

Weekly Meeting: Conversation with Kevin Raber

MEMBERS ONLY

DON’T FOREGET THE BOARD MEETING PRECEDING OUR REGULAR MEETING (6:15-7:15 PM)

Join us for a conversation with Indy’s own Kevin Raber.

I'M KEVIN RABER THE PHOTOGRAPHER:

“It’s all about the passion . . . the passion of photography and the beauty of the world that I get an opportunity to see and capture with my camera. I have been doing photography since I was 12 and since that first day and up to today and I am sure tomorrow, I find myself consumed with taking and making great photographs. My history runs deep and I have progressed through many stages of photography in my lifetime.

I had studios in the Philadelphia area, I worked for one of the premier color labs in the country and I was a big part of the digital revolution that has enveloped photography today. For the last five years, I was the publisher of Luminous-landscape one of the most visited websites on the world wide web for photo pros and enthusiasts. Previously, for 13 years I worked for Phase One a very progressive camera company making the finest cameras in the world.

My job allows me to work with photographers from around the globe and to photograph in some of the most beautiful places there are. I am blessed with a job I love and many friends I have made along the way.My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.”

Neighborhood Walk: Woodruff Place

  • 735 Woodruff Place East Drive Indianapolis, IN, 46201 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Our walks will continue in August with a visit to Woodruff Place -- a neighborhood on the East side of town, between East 10th Street, East Michigan Street, east of the Cottage Home neighborhood by about a half a mile.

"This gracious historic community, located just one mile east of downtown Indianapolis, is recognized as Indianapolis’s first planned residential suburb. In a beautiful park-like setting, you will find fine examples of lovely Victorian era homes, esplanades with fountains and statuary, and an ambiance that is unlike any other. Though not exactly a convenient location in 1872, (nearly an hour by wagon from the center of town), local advertisements were successful in attracting curious visitors eager to see what could possibly be so special about this place where the cost of a 40 x 80 foot lot exceeded a year’s wage." Woodruff Place remained an independent town until the costs of maintenance and the resolution of a lawsuit forced integration into the city of Indianapolis in 1962. Woodruff Place was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Our host will be Tom Abeel, deeply involved with the boards of the community and current President of Historic Urban Neighborhoods of Indianapolis.

We will meet Tom at the Woodruff Town Hall, 735 Woodruff Place, East Drive at 7PM. As days will be getting shorter, again, members are welcomed to come earlier for shooting opportunities.

Competition Results: "In /Out of Focus: Using Focus as a Compositional Device"

MEETING: Zoom

We’ll gather at 7 pm for informal discussion and then start the formal meeting at 7:30, for monthly competition results.

This month’s topic is "In /Out of Focus: Using Focus as a Compositional Device"

The topic is using focus – elements "In and Out of Focus" – as a compositional technique to emphasize, de-emphasize aspects of a scene. We’re not looking at fully out of focus images – that is distinctly different. Another term that is somewhat related includes – bokeh – a current trend with the fast maximum aperture lenses available to us today.

To achieve the desired effect, there are several factors at work:

  • Using a wide maximum aperture on your lens,

  • Using a normal to telephoto lens rather than a wide angle lens (typically).

  • Maximizing the distance between the subject and background/foreground.

You may find other techniques that will help you achieve a sharp subject, and an out of focus foreground or background.

Douglas Dubler, a New Yorker, has an extensive photographic career (now in his 70s), studying with Ansel Adams, having shot for European Vogue with 100s of cover images and close collaboration with companies in the fashion and cosmetic industries.

He has turned to more personal projects, and promoting a book just published on flower photography. We are hoping to schedule a program session with him.
